About Us

Who We Are

The Ballina Salmon Anglers Association is a community-based fishing club located in Ballina, Co. Mayo. We manage and maintain 5km of prime salmon fishing on the banks of the world-famous River Moy.

Our fishery provides a wide range of water to suit all anglers. From the fast-flowing sections at the weirs to the steadier pools up river, our stretch is known for being one of the first stops for fresh Atlantic Salmon entering the system from the tide.

Our Goal

The Association is run by local anglers with the primary goal of keeping salmon fishing accessible and affordable for everyone. We work tirelessly year-round to maintain the riverbanks, protect crucial fish stocks, and ensure that both our local members and visiting guests have a top-quality, unforgettable experience on the River Moy.

History of the Moy

The River Moy is world-famous for its Atlantic salmon fishing. Running straight through the heart of Ballina—widely known as the "Salmon Capital of Ireland"—the river has been drawing anglers from all over the globe for decades.

While it used to be a massive commercial netting operation back in the day, all of that was completely stopped in the late 1990s to protect the fish stocks. The river was handed back to the anglers, and the old commercial traps were replaced with modern fish counters to keep track of the runs.

Today, it’s 100% dedicated to rod-and-line fishing. With generations of history, record-breaking catches, and world-class stretches of water right on our doorstep, it remains one of the premier salmon rivers in Europe.
